Seasonal SEO: Getting Your Website Ready for the Holiday Season

Dare I say this, but with Christmas looming (yes, only four months away), now is an opportune time to prepare to attract new customers and take advantage of increased consumer spend.

Now is a great time to anticipate seasonal search shifts for the months ahead, we recommend analysing last year's website performance to fine-tune this year's campaign strategies (contact us to find out how). Seasonal search engine and consumer shifts such as those experienced prior to Christmas, make managing online marketing campaigns much like preparing for offline print marketing efforts. You've got to be ahead of the curve with planning, working with us to be aware of the metrics and returns on investments.

Increasingly, the Internet is ideally suited for Christmas gift buying. The question is, how can we make sure e-commerce websites don't miss out on this gold rush? As we know, search engines are the biggest source to consumers wishing to find your product or service. We also know that it can be tricky to maintain consistent rankings on search engine results pages, especially if your products/inventory changes with season. It is always a challenge to keep your site optimised for seasonal keywords. How do you keep the same site on the top for "Christmas gifts New Zealand" and then change it to top the charts for "Valentine's Day gifts New Zealand" With proper timing and techniques this can be done very gracefully. The most important aspects for seasonal SEO are :

Timing
Since organic search engine rankings cannot usually be achieved overnight, you need to be aware that the efforts you put into the site today might not return favorable results for weeks, or even months. You should usually give at least 2-4 months (that's ideal) starter time for any seasonal SEO project, to achieve higher rankings for seasonal keywords. That's why now is a good time to start.

Keyword research
This is a tricky one, especially if the season/event you are optimising the site for is a few months out. The web's keyword research tools will give you the data for the "past month" which definitely doesn't apply to what you are trying to do here. I wonder how many people search for "Christmas gifts" in July/August? So if all the research tools are not going to be helpful, what are your options? Here they are:

- The most important keywords are obvious. How would you search for the kind of products you are selling? This may give you some answers.

- Contact us about running a test Google adwords campaign or even getting traffic/budget estimates from your Google adwords account can be very helpful. If you don't have one, this is the time to get it.

Optimisation
Optimising your site for seasonal keywords is not any different from the regular SEO campaign. You just have to make sure that your home page, category and product pages provide good information in a keyword conscious way. The pages or sections (Christmas gifts section, Valentines day gift section etc) you have on the site should stay live throughout the year, so they can achieve better natural rankings. The only page you or Optymise have to change heavily is the home page of your site.

Including the year information in the text can be helpful too. For instance some people may search for Christmas tree stockists 2006, that's where your time stamping can come handy. Remember that successful organic SEO requires continuous monitoring and can needs a lot of tweaking for stable results. This is where Optymise comes in. Search engines are constantly updating their algorithms to make their results more effective and we make sure to stay up to date with all the details to ensure your website achieves its optimal performance in our campaign.

Seasonal SEO is trickier than regular SEO but can give fantastic ROI if planned and executed properly. Some other techniques to consider prior to getting started before the holidays to grab seasonally motivated traffic to your site can include a seasonal paid search or email marketing campaign. Contact us to find out how you can implement these and make them work for you, giving you the best possible Return on Investment.

Search World Highlights

Local search engine marketing: Getting Your Website to the top in Your Area

Three-quarters of New Zealanders have access to the internet at home or at work, according to InternetWorldStats.com. Increased broadband access in remote areas has seen rural communities going online with greater ease than ever before as well as this rate growing consistently over recent years. This is great news for the online business.

Local search in New Zealand is potentially the most overlooked yet effective search engine optimization aspect that can prove better than any other online marketing effort. As businesspeople, we need to understand this usually untapped resource of traffic to the site. Understanding how to employ a local search engine marketing strategy campaign is becoming fundamental for Kiwi internet marketers servicing small businesses and those undergoing SEO campaigns.

Here are few advantages of paying attention to local search engine optimization if you are a localized business:

  • More qualified traffic - If yours is a local business offering car painting services in the Auckland area, it won't be of any use to show up on the top of the first page of Google for "Car painting services" for a user in Christchurch.
  • Easier rankings - It is easier to get first page ranking for "Auckland car painting services" than "car painting services".

Now, just like Seasonal SEO, Local SEO is not much different from regular search engine optimization campaign. It is just a specialized version of SEO which can provide highly qualified traffic with comparatively less effort.

Few things that you need to keep in mind when planning and implementing local search engine marketing campaign are:

  • Keywords - As always, keyword selection is very important part of the campaign and can determine how effective the campaign. The variance between the regular and local keywords is obvious. Now the local keywords can range from city (car painting services in Remuera), city (Auckland car painting services) or regional (North Island etc). The keyword selection is simple, just adding the geographic information to the regular keywords.
  • Text - Including your local keywords in the text content of certain pages on the site. If it does not take away from the overall look of the site pages, include the address throughout the site, for example in a page footer.
  • Multiple locations - If your business deals with multiple locations, you will be better off with submitting your site in a suitable local directory or sub-domains. Your dedicated SEO will take care of this.
  • Phone number - Search engines are becoming smarter and savvier in extracting your geographic information from your content. Including your phone number (other than your 0800 number) in the pages would help search engines establish where your business is located, for example "03". This also gives you an ability to offer different phone numbers for your multiple locations.
  • Don't forget to submit - Unlike regular search, where submission to search engines is not often required (search engines tend to find your site with links for other sites), local business listing submissions are very important. Your SEO consultant will make sure your submissions are up to date and localised, if necessary.

Local search SEO or local search marketing can prove to be the easiest and the most effective search engine marketing tactic if done right, contact us to find out how we can help you activate a successful Local search campaign.

This Month's FAQ

This month's Q & A discusses Pay Per Click (or PPC) Advertising, what it is and what its benefits are.

Question: What is Pay Per Click advertising and how is it good for my business?

Answer: "Pay per click" (sometimes abbreviated as "PPC") is a method of online advertising in which businesses buy highly-ranked listings from a search engine. Unlike many other online advertising techniques, with pay per click, businesses pay for their listings only when their links are clicked. The more a business is willing to pay per click, the higher its site will be listed on the search engine's results. PPC is an extremely effective internet advertising tool. You only pay when someone clicks on your link. Imagine calling your local newspaper and telling them you were only willing to pay five cents each time someone brought your ad in the store! In essence, that is what pay per click programs offer - a chance to pay only when someone enters your site. We always recommend complimenting your SEO campaign with a small PPC campaign to achieve maximum coverage on the search engines. Contact us today to find out how we can help set a PPC campaign up for your business.
